Item #: SCP-XXX39
Clearance Level: 2/Restricted
Object Class: Keter
Disruption Class: 4/Ekhi
Risk Class: 5/Critical
Special Containment Procedures: Between ten and twenty instances of SCP-XXX39-A are to be kept at Armed Biological Containment Area-14 in high-threat biological containment cells equipped with sound-proofing of no less than 90 STC, thaumatological wards of no less than Rank 5 worked into the walls of the cell, and no less than rating 7 fireproofing. All corridors and rooms accessible from the containment cells for a distance of 500 meters are to be sound-proofed and flame-proofed to the same degree.
A variety of different types of instances (collectively designated SCP-XXX39-A) particularly instances of SCP-XXX39-A1, A3, and A4, are to be kept in containment at all times. See Document XXX11.42-23/11/20 for advanced containment procedures for each type of instance.
Instances do not seem to require sustenance or rest, but will attempt to violently consume the flesh of any humans or humanoid anomalies they encounter. As such, three security personnel armed with heavy shotguns loaded with white phosphorus-based incendiary ammunition are to be stationed in the security room for each cell at all times, and the cells do not need accommodations for feeding, bedding, or waste disposal.
Cells are to be cleaned and inspected for damage and deterioration twice a week and repaired as necessary. When personnel need to enter a containment cell they are to wear earplugs with an STC rating of no less than 100 and rating 10 advanced chemical-biological protective equipment. No personnel are to spend more than one-half hour of accumulated time exposed directly to soundwaves emitted by SCP-XXX39-A, and if possible only D-Class personnel are to directly interact with instances in their cells. Any personnel making direct contact with instances are to be screened for memetic exposure, physical infection, and thumatological irregularities immediately after contact is ceased, and a Class-B amnestic, a Class-23Y Counter-meme Panel, and a Class-5 Anti-Biological Anomaly Treatment Regime applied to any personnel demonstrating signs of infection.
All instances of SCP-XXX39-A1, A2, and A4 are to be kept chained to the floor of their cell. Instances of SCP-XXX39-A3 onward are to be contained within a thaumatological containment circle within the bounds of their cell to allow personnel access to the remainder of the cell. The circle should be no less than Rank 5.
In the event of a containment failure, all instances are to be terminated, and all SCP-XXX39-2 is to be neutralized with fire where possible, or with the application of a strong base followed by 99% Isopropyl alcohol (in a ratio of 70:157:2 base:isopropyl: SCP-XXX39-2 for maximum efficiency, though this only holds true for sure under laboratory conditions).
Any uncontained instances of SCP-XXX39-A and SCP-XXX39-1 are to be neutralized with extreme prejudice, using fire where possible. Infestations of class C or greater are to be led by MTF-Epsilon-9 (“Fire Eaters”). Any infected EVE-loci in the area are to be cleansed of SCP-XXX13 influence and locked down by Foundation thaumatologists, or if one is unavailable, any available friendly instances of SCP-XXX11-A.
Researchers believe that a critical mass of SCP-XXX39-A could lead to runaway expansion of SCP-XXX39 and potentially the reawakening of SCP-XXX39-Alpha, leading to either an EK-class Extinction-of-Humanity scenario or an XK-class End-of-the-World scenario.
Testing with SCP-XXX39-1 and -2 is forbidden by order of the O-5 Council as of [REDACTED]. Testing with SCP-XXX39-A instances should be focused on preventing their ability to infect others and on how to more effectively terminate instances.
Description: Known by occultists and thaumatologists in prior centuries as variously “The Rot,” or “The Call,” SCP-XXX39 is a memetic biological hazard with two distinct components:
A) cognito-hazardous whispers (SCP-XXX39-1) that can originate from infected persons or anomalously to some persons in an unidentified pattern during the night, and
B) a black substance with a high viscosity, with an average of 175,000 cps (SCP-XXX39-2), which is both toxic and infectious
Both components can infect humans and other creatures, leading to identical results. According to the writings of a small number of self-professed sorcerers from a number of centuries, including within SCP-XXX and SCP-XXXX, the Rot is a result of the dreams of unknown ancient hibernating entities (designated SCP-XXX39-Alpha) and has contributed to the fall of several ancient civilizations, including being a major factor behind the Bronze Age Collapse.
SCP-XXX39 has remarkable transformative properties when it infects living biological material, either memetically or through physical contact. It can infect both living and deceased creatures and has a variety of effects on even the same types of creature or deceased material. These properties result in the infected transforming into instances of SCP-XXX39-A, which are uniformly hostile to uninfected life, attempting to slay or infect any living creatures they encounter.
Many instances of SCP-XXX39-A keep up a constant stream of vocal expression, designated SCP-XXX39-1. While this vocalization varies widely between instances and seldom is repeated by an instance, in all cases, this vocalization demonstrates mental deterioration and breakage from reality. In addition, it serves as a cognito-hazard, potentially resulting in the infection of anyone who receives sufficient exposure, as well as causing other deleterious effects on a victim’s health.
SCP-XXX39-2 is a physical substance that is highly toxic to biological life, causing malaise and weakness with low exposure, and corrosive necrosis and organ failure with significant exposure. When animals and some types of plants and fungi expire due to SCP-XXX39-2 exposure, 76.2% of the time they will reanimate as instances of SCP-XXX39-A.
Of note are several types of SCP-XXX39-A. When neutralized, nearly all instances will begin to swell and after several seconds explode in a spray of SCP-XXX39-2. All types of SCP-XXX39-A except for A1 also seem to be capable of releasing a spray of SCP-XXX39-2 as an offensive action, and attempt to infect approximately half their victims this way.
SCP-XXX39-A1 seems to be the most common result of SCP-XXX39 infection. Victims seem to have had most of their flesh infiltrated by physical SCP-XXX39, leaving only the bones untransformed, but otherwise appear primarily humanoid still. They frequently develop claws, tentacles, and other methods of inflicting injury on other creatures.
SCP-XXX39-A2 instances seem to be more heavily infected than SCP-XXX39-A1, gaining the ability to generate weapons, including firearms, out of SCP-XXX39-2. As such, they are ill-suited to containment and should be neutralized when encountered uncontained.
SCP-XXX39-A3 seem to have transformed entirely into the substance of SCP-XXX39-2, able to change shape, throw ropes of SCP-XXX39-2, and transform into pools of SCP-XXX39-2 indistinguishable from an untransformed instance. Without pools of SCP-XXX39-2 to hide in, SCP-XXX39-A3 is only a moderate containment risk.
It appears that SCP-XXX39-A4 are heavily infected humans, despite their overtly bestial appearance. With enhanced strength, mouths overgrown with teeth, and the growth of sharp claws, they are high threat entities.
SCP-XXX39-A5 seem to be entities that are the result [REDACTED] instances of SCP-XXX39-A3. SCP-XXX39-A3 instances appear to be unable to begin this process without access [REDACTED]. Appearing as polar-bear-or-larger-sized quadrupedal creatures with highly elongated heads ending with a multitude of tentacles and long, thin, arched limbs, which are unlike those of any known animal but resemble arachnid limbs more closely than anything else, according to a survey of 24 researchers with Class-2-XXX39 clearance. As befits their size, SCP-XXX39-A5 possess great strength, along with the all the capabilities of SCP-XXX39-A3, and the ability to drive their facial tentacles into a victim and [REDACTED].
